Chapter 347 Starch Sausage
Chapter 347 Starch Sausage
She gestured with her chin toward the room next door. "You could buy a high-capacity battery."
Xu Xiaoyan followed her gaze and saw a pile of black cubes stacked there, looking dusty and gray.
"Battery?"
"Yes, you can buy one and use the fan. When it runs out of power, you can come here to charge it."
"Come here to top up?" Xu Xiaoyan was taken aback. "You'll top up for me?"
"Here you go," the saleswoman nodded. "One water ticket per use, full or small, it's the same price."
"Where does your electricity come from?" she asked.
The saleswoman glanced behind her and said, "We've started installing solar panels, right on the roof of this building."
Xu Xiaoyan's eyes suddenly lit up when she heard this.
"What about our neighborhood?" She leaned forward. "Will our area have electricity soon too?"
The saleswoman shook her head. "Currently, the quantity is limited, and only a small number can be installed and used. Our area is a supermarket, so we have priority. As for residential areas like yours—"
She didn't finish her sentence, but her meaning was already quite clear.
Xu Xiaoyan nodded and didn't ask any further questions.
She should have thought of this long ago: priority for the military, priority for daily necessities, and for ordinary residential areas? Let them be last.
Xu Xiaoyan's gaze shifted from the batteries to the cardboard boxes in the far corner of the shelf.
She walked straight over and picked one up.
The red packaging had the words "starch sausage" printed on it, along with a smiling cartoon pig. She flipped it over to check the production date and found it was from half a year ago. Looking at the production address, it said Hope Processing Plant in Dungeon B District.
Starch sausage is basically just starch with some seasonings, with very little meat content. But in this day and age, it's good enough to have something to fill your stomach, who cares about whether it's meat or not?
She looked up and glanced around. There was only one box of starch sausage left on the shelf. She had everything else in her inventory. Why not use all her credit to buy this? That way, she wouldn't have to worry about it being leaked when she traded it later.
Without further hesitation, she picked up the box of starch sausages and headed towards the counter. As she passed the row of dried biscuits, she caught a glimpse of someone watching her, but she ignored them and continued walking.
I walked up to the counter and put the box on it.
The saleswoman looked up, glanced at the box of starch sausages, then at her, her eyes filled with a hint of doubt.
"I want to buy five kilograms of starch sausage," Xu Xiaoyan said, "but I didn't know how much, so I just brought it all to be weighed."
The saleswoman nodded, stood up, dragged the box to her side, bent down to look inside, and took out all the starch sausages and placed them on the scale next to her.
"Four kilograms and six hundred and eighty grams," the saleswoman said, looking up.
Xu Xiaoyan nodded.
"I'll take all of these," she said. "And the rest of the credit—"
She turned her head and glanced at the shelf over there. "I'll buy some more rice to make it five kilograms."
The saleswoman responded, took the box of starch sausage off the scale, placed it next to the counter, and then turned and walked towards the rice.
Just then, a voice suddenly rang out from behind.
"Hey, what's wrong with you?"
Xu Xiaoyan turned her head to look.
There were about twelve or thirteen people lined up behind the counter. The woman at the front was a middle-aged woman, thin with high cheekbones, who was staring at her.
The woman was carrying a cloth bag, which was bulging and its contents were unknown.
"What do you mean?" The woman took a step forward. "You took all the remaining starch sausages? Are the people behind us going to buy any?" Her voice was quite loud, echoing in the small underground supermarket.
Except for one young woman who was looking down and gently patting the child in her arms without looking at her, the people in front of her all looked over, their eyes not exactly friendly.
Xu Xiaoyan looked at the middle-aged woman without saying a word.
"I'm talking to you!" The woman took another step forward. "Take the whole box! Can you eat all of that by yourself? You know that's robbery!"
The young man next to him chimed in, "Exactly! Leave some for others, this is just too unfair."
The old man didn't speak, but he nodded.
Xu Xiaoyan stood there, looking at those people.
The middle-aged woman continued, her voice shrill, "We queued for so long, hoping to buy something to take home, and then you pull this stunt, buying up all the remaining starch sausages! What are we supposed to buy?"
As she spoke, she took two more steps forward, almost getting close to Xu Xiaoyan.
"you--"
"The limit for grains is five kilograms," Xu Xiaoyan said.
The sound wasn't loud, but the middle-aged woman paused, startled.
Xu Xiaoyan looked at her and said, "The starch sausage I bought only weighs 4.68 kilograms."
The middle-aged woman opened her mouth, but no words came out.
Xu Xiaoyan continued, "I'm just buying things within my own spending limit, you're being too nosy!"
The middle-aged woman's face flushed red, and her lips trembled as if she wanted to say something, but couldn't.
The young man muttered to himself, "That's true, but you're going too far..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but the meaning was clear.
The young woman holding the child looked up, glanced at Xu Xiaoyan again, and then lowered her head to continue patting the child.
Xu Xiaoyan ignored them and turned around to look at the counter.
The saleswoman had already packed a small bag of rice and was carrying it over.
She placed the bag of rice on the counter. "It weighs 1.32 jin (approximately 0.5 kg), which adds up to exactly 5 kilograms."
She pointed to the electronic scale next to her, which displayed numbers.
Xu Xiaoyan nodded.
The saleswoman entered the data into the system, then looked up and said, "A total of five kilograms, fifteen water tickets. Would you like to buy a battery box, an electric fan, or something similar? These are very popular."
"No need, thank you, I'll just buy food." Xu Xiaoyan took out the fifteen water tickets from her pocket and placed them on the counter.
"Where can we change the water?" Xu Xiaoyan asked hurriedly, as if she had just thought of something.
The saleswoman put the box of starch sausages and the bag of rice together and pushed them in front of her. "These are your things. Take them. If you want to change the water, it's over there. There's a small door to go in."
Xu Xiaoyan nodded, stuffed the rice and rice sausage into her backpack, then turned around and walked towards the door.
As she passed by those people, the middle-aged woman spoke again, her voice lower than before, but still clearly audible: "What kind of people are they? They have no sense of public morality at all."
Xu Xiaoyan paused for a moment, but did not stop or turn around, and continued walking forward.
Public morality.
Talking about public morality in the apocalypse? That's ridiculous!
If the person in front of her was this middle-aged woman, and there happened to be only a little bit of starch sausage left, she was sure that this person would most likely choose to buy it all.
After all, the others who came with her before her, although they didn't buy as much as she did, each bought at least 3 kilograms. So why is she being criticized by everyone? Isn't it just because she bought the last one?
