"I just want you to understand one thing." Chu Hang's tone was calm, but every word struck Tony's heart like a hammer blow: "Individual strength is limited; even I wouldn't dare call myself invincible."
He took a step forward.
“I’m not consulting you, Stark. I’m informing you.”
"Now, put on your armor and come with me. We still have many people to meet."
Tony looked at him, his lips moved, but he couldn't utter a single word.
He glanced at Pepper, who was pale with fright beside him.
Finally, he took a deep breath, as if using all his strength.
“Jarvis,” he said.
"Yes, sir."
"Get your Mark 6 ready. We're going on a long trip."
Chapter 102 The Avengers Assemble (Part 2)
A black Quinjet fighter jet pierced the night sky.
It was stuffy inside the cabin.
Tony Stark sat in the corner, arms crossed, his face even uglier than the stock he'd just bought. The blue light from the reactor in his chest was steady, but his mood was anything but.
“Jarvis,” he called in his mind.
"Yes, sir."
"Analyze the power outage again."
"Sir, the energy system, including all physically isolated backup lines, was simultaneously cut off within the same Planck timeframe. There were no signs of intrusion, no energy source, and no physical contact. The conclusion is... inexplicable."
"Inexplicable." Tony muttered these four words to himself, feeling a burning urge to bite.
He was a scientist who believed that everything could be measured and explained. But the man named Anthony Chen was a walking embodiment of "inexplicable."
Is it some kind of high-frequency electromagnetic pulse? Or an even more outlandish space technology?
He couldn't understand it. This was even more of a headache for him than dealing with palladium poisoning.
Coulson sat opposite him, rubbing his hands together, looking excited to meet his idol.
“Mr. Stark, it is a great honor to meet you. I have collected your father’s complete set of invention briefings, as well as all the news clippings from when you first revealed your identity.”
Tony glanced at him but didn't say anything.
Coulson, unfazed, continued, "We all have high hopes for you. So does the Captain. Oh, and by the way, I also have a set of first-edition Captain America collectible cards, in perfect condition, just waiting for his autograph."
“Really?” Tony’s tone was barbed. “Then you should go find him instead of bothering me. Maybe he can even get your signature on your little shield.”
Coulson's smile froze for a moment.
Chu Hang leaned against the cabin wall, his eyes closed, as if he were asleep.
He suddenly spoke up: "Coulson, ignore him. He was just scared by me and is throwing a tantrum now."
Tony's face darkened: "I'm not throwing a tantrum!"
“You do.” Chu Hang didn’t even open his eyes. “Your mind is full of questions right now. You want to know the principles behind my abilities and why your Jarvis can’t figure it out. Right?”
Tony choked.
"That's not scientific." After hesitating for a long time, he finally said this.
"Come talk to me about science when you can explain the Rainbow Bridge in Asgard," Chu Hang said, then ignored him.
The fighter jets pierced through the clouds, and a massive aircraft carrier appeared below.
"That's it?" Tony looked out the porthole and curled his lip. "I thought S.H.I.E.L.D. would have something good, but it's just a bigger ship."
Coulson smiled mysteriously: "We'll see."
The Quinjet landed smoothly on the deck.
As Tony stepped out of the cockpit, he felt a low hum coming from the deck beneath his feet. The entire aircraft carrier began to sway slightly. He saw four enormous turbofans slowly rise from both sides of the hull, their blades spinning and whipping up a gale that shattered the thin mist on the sea surface.
The salty sea breeze turned into a scorching heat.
The ship took off.
It slowly rose into the air, like a steel behemoth awakening, and disappeared into the clouds.
Tony tilted his head back, his mockery turning into undisguised surprise.
“Well,” he whispered to Pepper over the communicator, “it seems their toys aren’t all junk.”
Kolkata, India.
The slums on the outskirts of the city are dirty and crowded. The air is thick with the smells of sweat, curry, and cheap spices.
Natasha Romanov, dressed in inconspicuous clothes, moved through the chaotic streets like a drop of water merging into the ocean. A little girl with pigtails led the way, skillfully dodging the sewage on the ground and the outstretched hands of beggars.
They entered a dilapidated house.
Inside the room, a bespectacled man was wiping the forehead of a feverish patient. His movements were gentle and focused.
He is Dr. Bruce Banner.
He already knew someone was coming.
“You should have sent someone to clear the area beforehand,” Banner said without looking up, his voice very gentle.
Natasha glanced out the window. She knew that at least three sniper positions were already in place on the rooftops across the street.
“We just want to talk to you,” she said.
“The guy I talked to last time almost wrecked Harlem.” Banner covered the patient with a blanket, stood up, and looked at her. His eyes were calm, but beneath that calm lay a wild beast ready to break free of its cage at any moment.
“I know you don’t want trouble, Doctor,” Natasha said. “Neither do we. We’re in big trouble and need the help of one of the top experts in gamma rays.”
She handed him a tablet with information about the Cosmic Cube on it.
"The energy radiation from this thing is very similar to your research."
Banner glanced at it only once before pushing it away.
"What exactly does S.H.I.E.L.D. want from me?" he asked directly. "You want to turn me into a weapon?"
“We want your help to find it. That’s all,” Natasha said. “Chief Nick Fury sent me because he believes you can help.”
"What if I say no?"
“We will take coercive measures,” Natasha replied just as directly.
Banner laughed, a helpless laugh. He walked to the window and looked at the bustling street outside.
“It took me a long time to find a place like this. Here, I can help people and control that big guy. I don’t want to turn back into that monster.”
“We all know you can’t control it forever, Doctor,” Natasha’s voice was soft but firm. “This time, we need that monster.”
Banner remained silent for a long time.
The little girl who had led the way ran over and tugged at his sleeve. He patted her head, a gentle look on his face.
Finally, he turned around.
“Okay,” he said, “but if I lose control…you’d better be prepared.”
Space carrier, bridge.
The place resembles a giant beehive, with agents busy at their posts and data constantly updating on their screens.
Steve Rogers, dressed in his new uniform, stood ramrod straight, watching everything with a detached look in his eyes that seemed out of place with his surroundings.
Chu Hang and Tony walked in.
"Not bad, One-Eyed." Tony looked around and whistled. "How much of the taxpayers' money did you spend?"
Fury ignored him and pointed to the holographic projection table in the center.
"Gentlemen," his voice boomed across the bridge, "I think you all know why you're here. A traitor to Asgard, Loki, stole the Tesseract, an object of unfathomable power. He murdered our agents and took control of our people."
The screen showed surveillance footage of Loki making everyone kneel down at a dinner party in Germany.
"He wants to rule the Earth. The scepter in his hand can control people's minds. We don't know what he will do with the Tesseract, but it's definitely not a good thing. Behind him is also an alien army."
"The Avengers program was created to deal with this threat." Fury looked at everyone present. "Each of you possesses power beyond the reach of ordinary people. Now, the world needs you to bring those powers together."
"Our mission is twofold: first, to find Loki; second, to retrieve the Tesseract."
After the briefing, everyone dispersed.
Chu Hang walked over to Fury, and the two went to a secluded corner.
"The second phase," Chu Hang said, getting straight to the point.
Fury narrowed his one eye: "I don't understand what you're talking about."
“Stop pretending, Nick.” Chu Hang looked at him. “You’re not just looking for the Rubik’s Cube. You’re studying it, trying to replicate its energy to create weapons. That’s the ‘Phase Two’ plan, isn’t it?”
Fury fell silent.
“Thor’s appearance made you realize how fragile Earth is in the universe. So you want to create stronger weapons to protect Earth,” Chu Hang said. “You brought Dr. Banner here not only because he understands gamma rays, but also because you want to study the Hulk and that kind of runaway energy.”
Fury clenched his fist. Chu Hang spoke every single word perfectly.
“This world is becoming increasingly dangerous, and we must have our own deterrent,” Fury said in a low voice.
"Deterrence or provocation?" Chu Hang retorted. "You're holding the nuclear button, so you're always looking for a place to press it. Be careful, Nick, don't play with fire and get burned."
After saying that, Chu Hang turned and left, leaving Fury standing alone in the shadows.
At that moment, Dr. Banner, led by Coulson, walked onto the bridge. He was wearing an ill-fitting suit and looked rather stiff, like a college professor who had wandered into a party.
Steve politely stepped forward and extended his hand: "Doctor, it's a pleasure to meet you."
Banner shook hands with him, looking somewhat bewildered.
Tony, however, looked at him as if he had discovered a new toy, his eyes lit up, and he walked straight over.
“Dr. Bruce Banner!” He patted Banner on the shoulder enthusiastically. “I’m a huge fan of yours! Your paper on anti-electron collisions is a masterpiece! How did you come up with the idea of using the Dirac model to explain gamma-ray pulses? My God, you’re an artist!”
Banner was taken aback by his enthusiasm: "Uh... thank you."
