Chapter 350 Susie and Her Friends
Chapter 350 Susie and Her Friends
Chapter 350 Susie and Her Friends
Queens, the Earl Hall’s back garden.
As the most upscale area in Backlund, the environment here is far superior to the smog-filled eastern district. At least, the sky isn't that oppressive gray stained with industrial smog.
"Meow~"
Laki was lying comfortably on the back of her golden retriever Susie, lazily basking in the sun. Susie was also curled up in a ball, seemingly happy to be this soft and comfortable "cat cushion".
Chew~
An owl with glossy feathers contentedly finished the last piece of tender beef in its bowl. It flapped its wings, wiped its sharp beak, and then slowly flew above the orange cat.
"Boss, I'm finished eating."
"The beef here is so much better than the stuff that stingy Darkwell gave me."
"Meow—" Laki meowed lazily.
Harry understood immediately, slowly landing beside the golden retriever and obediently raising his head. The orange cat stretched out its furry paw and gently rubbed the owl's head, then rolled over to continue enjoying its rare sunbath.
"Meow~"
"Why do you seem a little unhappy?"
As an "observer," Susie noticed her friend's recent emotional changes. Lately, the other person's mood seemed to be steadily declining—
As if her secret had been exposed, Rachel shrank back awkwardly, burying her face in Susie's fluffy golden fur. She suddenly realized that a golden retriever's overly sharp intuition wasn't necessarily a good thing. Although this guy was usually rather goofy, there were always things that couldn't be hidden from her.
"Yeah, yeah, boss, you seem really unhappy," Harry asked with concern.
To be fair, it is quite satisfied with its current life.
That day, just because it mocked Darkwell's intelligence, it was chased and beaten with a broom by the enraged apothecary. After it fled the herbalist shop in a sorry state, it encountered this strange duo of a cat and a dog.
He was then taken to this luxurious-looking villa and enjoyed the most delicious meal of his life—no, of his bird life.
"Want to eat this food every day? Meow~ Just become my subordinate."
"Woof! Be my friend too!"
Looking at these two rare fellow animals (extraordinary creatures) and the delicious food he had just eaten, Harry hesitated for a full two seconds before decisively agreeing.
As a result, Laki gained a new follower.
Because Mrs. Griffin prepared food for it every day, the portion of food that Susie prepared for it was far too much for one cat to finish—and cats generally eat much less than dogs.
Harry's arrival helped to absorb this extra portion.
"Sigh—" The orange cat sighed in a human-like manner. Feeling the worried gazes of its two "little brothers," it finally chose to reveal a bit of the truth.
"You mean, your owner sent you to live with an old woman and then rarely came back to see you, is that right?" Susie asked in a sympathetic tone.
"Meow~ It's the owner," Rachel corrected.
"Maybe—he has something very important to do—" Susie comforted her, knowing that humans always have many complicated matters to attend to.
"Is he really that good? I heard you tell stories about him before, and he seemed much stronger than that Darkwell guy." Harry expressed his strong curiosity about Lorne.
"Meow~ He really is amazing," Rachel's tail twitched slightly at the mention of Lorne, a hint of barely perceptible pride in it—
Arrogantly, "But I'm strong too!"
Just as it suddenly became interested, stood up from Susie's back, and prepared to tell its two little brothers about its glorious adventures with Lorne at sea—
A clear shout came from not far away.
"Susie! I'm home!"
So many things happened today!
"Audrey is back—" Susie exclaimed.
"What bad luck." Rachel was a little disappointed that her speech had been interrupted. She nimbly jumped off Susie and then stretched out her claws toward Harry the owl.
Harry understood immediately, flew to Rachel's side, and carefully used his paw to grasp the fur on the orange cat's back. Then, he spread his wings and carried his boss into the distant sky.
"Goodbye~" Susie stuck out her tongue and waved her paw at her friend's retreating figure.
"Susie, why do you seem a little unhappy?"
As soon as she entered the door, Audrey keenly noticed the somewhat downcast mood of her beloved dog.
"It's alright, Audrey. What were you trying to say?"
"Yes, Susie. I saw James Scott again today."
"And he also gave me a gift!" she said, showing Susie the ruby necklace she was wearing around her neck.
"It is indeed beautiful—but what's so special about it?"
Susie was somewhat puzzled. As the eldest daughter of the Hall family, Audrey possessed countless pieces of jewelry. While the necklace in front of her was nice, she couldn't see anything particularly special about it, and it certainly couldn't compare to Audrey's custom-made jewelry by famous designers.
"Susie, look!" Audrey smiled mysteriously. Then she infused a touch of spirituality into the necklace.
Immediately afterwards, a comforting warmth spread out from the gemstone, dispelling the slight chill of the early winter evening.
Sensing the subtle changes in the surrounding temperature, Susie curiously turned her gaze in that direction.
What came into its view was a sudden burst of blinding light!
"Woof—!"
'
Susie screamed and quickly closed her eyes, stretching out her front paws to press down hard on her blinded eyes.
"I'm sorry, Susie! I'm not quite sure how to control the power of this necklace yet." Upon seeing this, Audrey quickly suppressed her spirituality and apologized hastily.
"I'm fine, Audrey."
Several seconds later, Susie's vision was fully restored.
"However—" It came to Audrey's side, sniffed, and took a careful sniff.
"What's wrong?" Audrey asked, puzzled.
"Audrey, I have a feeling—you have a familiar, yet irritating, scent about you."
"Miss Audrey perfectly fits the traditional image of an innocent and naive aristocratic young lady."
In his office, Lorne recalled the scene of their meeting that afternoon.
"However, she also possesses a certain degree of shrewdness—"
"In this respect, she is far superior to Heyole."
"But essentially, she's probably still a rather naive, sheltered young lady living in an ivory tower. That's the impression I get—"
That's a bit strange.
Lorne couldn't forget the seemingly casual yet scrutinizing gaze she received at the banquet, or the scene when she sent that golden retriever to follow her during their first meeting.
He found that Audrey Hall was different from all the women he had ever met.
"Innocence and cunning can coexist in one person—"
Is it because of the path she belongs to? Or is it purely her personal trait, or the influence of her aristocratic environment?
etc!"
Lorne suddenly remembered something. Back when he had just returned to Backlund and visited Fors as a pen pal, Fors and Hugh had subtly inquired about the nobility, seemingly believing that "Lorne Disenk" had a deep connection with a certain nobleman—
There seems to be more to the story behind their investigation of me back then—
"Could it be—the noblewoman they're talking about is Audrey Hall?" A knowing glint flashed in Lorne's eyes.
"Hmm—a nobleman whom both Hugh and Fors know, and who even explicitly sent his pet to track me."
"But I shouldn't have any connection with her at all, right?"
"It seems that some more in-depth investigation is still necessary."
