Chapter 204: The Navy’s Internal Chaos Begins
The newspaper lay open across the stone table, its corners slightly curled.
The bold, black headline drew the eye immediately.
But Davy Jones looked at the paper with little expression — only that same faintly contemptuous glint flickering in his gray-blue eyes.
Jinbe couldn't read his thoughts.
He simply lifted his cup, drained it in one gulp, and then began to explain:
"This issue shocked the world far too much. After only a few hundred copies were sold, it was immediately recalled and banned… but one copy still managed to fall into our hands."
"It briefly recounts the entire Marineford War — some truths mixed with lies — and finally throws out an outrageous claim: that Marine Headquarters was utterly defeated by the pirates. It insists that two Admirals and a Vice Admiral were killed in battle, using this photo as so-called proof."
"Morgans went too far this time. I doubt he'll be able to speak publicly again for quite a while… If he wants to return to print, he'll have to pay the World Government dearly."
At the mention of Morgans, Davy Jones couldn't help recalling how Alvida and Kuro often spoke of that "news tycoon" around him.
The title "Demon King of the Deep Sea (in short Deep Sea King)" had spread so widely and so quickly thanks in large part to Morgans.
It was his sensational, eye-grabbing style of journalism that made Davy Jones a name known across the seas — among pirates, Marines, and even the Revolutionaries.
Alvida had once called Morgans a "big mouth," and it seemed she wasn't wrong — the man couldn't restrain himself from once again making bold judgments about the Marineford War.
But this time, the World Government would not let him run wild.
Jinbe paused, then continued:
"Morgans has always published shocking stories. His credibility is low, but people love to read them — and the Government has usually turned a blind eye. But this time, he crossed the line…"
"With Admirals Akainu and Aokiji both rarely appearing in public — supposedly recuperating from their wounds — and only Kizaru showing up in recent reports, the public began to speculate. They thought the Admirals might really have fallen in battle."
"So when this article appeared, panic spread like wildfire. People believed that Akainu and Aokiji had truly been killed."
"The Navy responded swiftly, though. They issued an immediate 'clarification,' and had both Admirals appear in the New World, where they destroyed several pirate strongholds — greatly stabilizing public morale."
Jinbe set his cup down and added gravely:
"Still, the effect of this paper was like tossing a lit match into a pile of oil-soaked wood. The real explosion came yesterday, with Marine Headquarters' official announcement—"
"Fleet Admiral Sengoku and Vice Admiral Garp will both resign from their posts and retire from active duty."
That was the "major event" Jinbe had referred to.
Davy Jones listened, recalling Garp from the Reverse Mountain battle, and Sengoku from Marineford. His brow furrowed deeply.
Had they lost their minds?
Or had all of Marine Headquarters gone insane?
"That's certainly newsworthy," he said at last. "The two pillars of the Navy, stepping down at the moment the world most needs them?"
With Whitebeard dead, it should have been a time of triumph for the World Government.
But now, with that massive power gone, the balance of the New World was shattered.
Chaos reigned.
And yet Sengoku and Garp chose this moment to retire?
Davy Jones could almost hear the pirates of the New World laughing and cheering at the news.
Jinbe nodded slightly.
"I found it hard to believe at first too. But they've wanted to retire for a long time. The World Government begged them to stay on in secondary roles, and they finally agreed."
"Even so, the Fleet Admiral's seat is now empty, and the Navy's 'Hero' has departed. The blow to morale is tremendous. But… I suspect this is only the beginning."
"Among those with the power and reputation to succeed Sengoku, there are only the three Admirals. Kizaru has already withdrawn from the race, but Akainu and Aokiji refuse to yield."
"Aokiji's supporters are mostly within Marine Headquarters — Sengoku, Garp, and the traditional officers. Akainu's backers lie within the World Government — the Five Elders, and many of the great families."
"For now, Sengoku will act as interim Fleet Admiral until their power struggle is resolved. But internal chaos in the Navy is inevitable."
At that, Davy Jones finally smirked — a cold, amused sound rumbling from his chest.
"Unbelievable. Whitebeard is dead. The three Emperors are carving up his territory. Heavenly Yaksha Doflamingo and Blackbeard fish in troubled waters, and the Whitebeard remnants still linger… and yet, instead of uniting against their enemies, the Navy turns its blade on itself."
Jinbe nodded firmly, agreeing completely.
"This rift started even before Marineford, and only worsened after. After Whitebeard's funeral, I discussed it with Ace, Marco, Sabo, and Ivankov. None of us imagined it would truly come to this."
Davy Jones raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
"And how did you all think it would end?"
Jinbe did not hold back.
"Sabo and Ivankov believed that Aokiji would ultimately yield to Akainu — that Akainu would become the new Fleet Admiral, and the Navy would stabilize again."
He sighed.
"I tend to agree. No matter how deep their differences run, those two aren't fools. For the sake of the Navy and their idea of 'Justice,' one of them will bend."
"And for Aokiji to yield to Akainu — in truth, it means yielding to the World Government. That outcome seems more likely. Sengoku and Garp will probably accept it, too."
Jinbe shook his head slowly.
"What else could they do? Fight each other to the death? Whoever survives takes the title of Fleet Admiral?"
"With Sengoku and Garp gone, they'd be mad to risk destroying what remains. They know better than anyone that now is the time the Navy must appear united."
He paused, then shifted the topic slightly.
"As for Ace and Marco — their focus lies elsewhere. Before leaving, Red-Haired Shanks invited them to join him, but they refused."
"Even so, their current situation is dire. When they hear of Sengoku and Garp's resignations, they'll likely feel relief."
"Right now, they're guarding a piece of territory far larger than they can hold — and every passing predator wants a bite of it."
"They can't chase every threat. All they can do is hold what's left and pray the Navy doesn't stab them in the back while they do it."
Davy Jones caught the subtle undertone in Jinbe's words, and let out a low chuckle.
"So you're here as their messenger, then?"
Jinbe refilled his cup again.
"Whitebeard once showed me kindness. I'll repay any debt I owe — to him, to his sons, to anyone who carries that spirit.
But I'm also doing this for Fishman Island… for my crew… and for myself."
"We all believe that the Marineford War marked the greatest upheaval in over twenty years. The New World will be reshuffled, and everything will change.
New Emperors will rise."
Setting down the jug, Jinbe met Davy Jones's gaze squarely — his eyes clear and resolute.
"Ace and Marco
wish to form an alliance with you, Captain Davy Jones.
If a new Four Emperors are to emerge in this new era… they hope one of them will be you, not Doflamingo — and not Blackbeard."
