"Help!!!"
Is anyone there?!
"Help me, please!!"
The cries for help were very urgent, and it was clear that the person calling for help was in very bad shape.
Upon hearing the cry for help, Mo Jiang was somewhat stunned. He looked around at the dense forest surroundings and listened to the distant cry for help, feeling as if he had seen this scene somewhere before.
"A cry for help from the dense forest..."
"Did I fucking end up in the Grand Forest?"
If we're talking about rescuing people in the forest, then the one that left the deepest impression on Mo Jiang was undoubtedly the time he rescued Celia in the Grand Forest.
That woman who kept telling him, "Today is another day full of 70,000," has swindled him out of a lot of money over the years.
I'm out of money to save Arad.JPG
"Too bad, it's not that woman."
Mo Jiang could tell that the cry for help was not a girl's voice, but rather a burly male voice, sounding like a man in his thirties or forties.
If it really were Celia calling for help, Mo Jiang would probably make that woman return all the money he'd spent saving the Arad continent over the years.
At the same time, Mo Jiang did not slow down. With a light touch of his toes, he rushed out like an arrow. Before long, he saw a man dressed as a woodcutter being chased by a group of half-grown green dwarfs.
Those little green dwarfs were about half a person's height, carrying iron plates, wooden sticks, and slings. You didn't even need to get very close to feel their malice towards humans.
The woodcutter ran for his life, but he couldn't shake off his pursuers. He knew those guys who deserved to go to hell were just having fun.
But the woodcutter dared not slow down at all, for if he were caught, his fate might be as terrible as death.
But no matter how fast they accelerate, the distance between them continues to shrink.
Just as the two were getting closer and closer, and the woodcutter's eyes were filled with despair.
A knife descended from the sky, its crimson blade flashing so fast that the woodcutter's eyes couldn't even catch it, and all the green-skinned dwarves were instantly killed.
Mo Jiang stood in front of the woodcutter, carefully examined his attire, and determined that the place he was in was probably not modern times, but rather some kind of fantasy world.
Seeing that he was safe, the woodcutter breathed a sigh of relief and slumped to the ground. "Thank you for your help, Tyr. I almost thought I was going to be taken back and cooked by these goblins. May I ask who you are?"
"My name is Mo Jiang. I'm lost. Can you tell me where the nearest city is? Also, where am I?"
"be lost?"
The woodcutter looked at Mo Jiang's clothes and appearance; his unusual black hair and black eyes convinced him of Mo Jiang's story.
"This is the outskirts of Neverwinter Forest. The nearest city is Neverwinter City to the south."
178. Starting point: Searching for a cure for the plague. Ending point: Gods and demons fly everywhere.
Neverwinter City—Mo Jiang is all too familiar with this name.
Neverwinter is a city in the world of Forgotten Realms from the tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons.
Neverwinter is a civilized yet not arrogant, crowded yet not greedy, charming yet not bizarre city.
The city is renowned for the works of its master artisans, including colorful glass lamps, precise water clocks, and elegant jewelry.
The gardens of Neverwinter are equally famous, irrigated by the supernatural warm waters of the River Neverwinter.
Therefore, the markets here are full of summer fruits, and even in winter they are decorated with flowers to make them vibrant.
This artisan-friendly city is a thriving and efficient commercial center; quarreling and fighting are forbidden, and trade between the city and the outside world is mainly conducted through merchants from Deepwater City.
The city's three architectural wonders are the three bridges over the River Neverwinter: the Dolphin Bridge, the Pterosaur Bridge, and the Sleeping Dragon Bridge. Each bridge is incredibly sculpted in the likeness of the creature that named it.
The launchers and missiles were the work of the city's artisans. The city also had a large standing armed force, with a squad of 400 archers and spearmen guarding the city walls and harbor, and patrolling along the route from the northernmost port to Leilong, a hundred miles away.
During peacetime, sixty soldiers receive training, sixty are on leave, and sixty serve as city guards.
Like everyone in the City of Crafts, they are efficient, swift, and dedicated to their duties.
But for Mo Jiang, the main reason he learned about Neverwinter was a game.
Neverwinter Nights is a role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by Atari on June 16, 2002. It is based on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons 6rd Edition.
"Alright, how do I get to Neverwinter?"
Mo Jiang rummaged through his satchel, took out a gold bean, and tossed it to the woodcutter. "I have business to attend to in Neverwinter City. If you can take me there, this is yours."
The woodcutter stared in disbelief at the gold nugget in his hand. He couldn't resist taking a small bite, and the texture told him that it was definitely gold.
Although it's unclear what the prices are like in Faerûn, one can tell from the woodcutter's appearance that gold is quite valuable.
The woodcutter looked at the gold beans in his hand. This was probably the money he had saved up over many years without eating or drinking. But he swallowed hard and, with great willpower, returned the gold beans.
"You saved my life, leading the way isn't worth that much."
Mo Jiang had no intention of taking back the gold beans. "Take them. I never take back what I give away. This is what you deserve."
Mo Jiang didn't say the other reason for not taking it back: when the woodcutter bit it just now, he clearly saw that the golden bean was wet with saliva.
Asking him to take it back is something I can't get over just because of his dislike for it.
Seeing that Mo Jiang insisted, the woodcutter did not continue to refuse, but kept thanking him.
Although this gold bean wasn't much, it was the money he could keep, and the woodcutter could certainly do something with it.
Perhaps it's used as capital to start a small business, or to expand the house, or simply to hide it away and use it when necessary.
Regardless of the usage, it represents that this woodcutter has gained another option in his life.
An option that might eliminate the need for him and his descendants to make a living by chopping wood.
Along the way, the woodcutter awkwardly and repeatedly expressed his gratitude, while Mo Jiang, by tapping him from the side, managed to glean some information about Wudong City.
The city is ruled by Lord Nasir, an adventurer who acquired many magical items during his adventures and now uses these spoils to hire his personal guards, the Nine Guards of Neverwinter.
Based on the information obtained from the interrogation, Mo Jiang roughly determined that the current time period should be during [Neverwinter Nights 1].
Because the game is quite old, Mo Jiang doesn't remember much about it. The only thing he remembers is that demigods, liches, and dragons appeared one after another in the later stages, and there was even a power comparable to a god that could destroy the entire continent of Faerûn.
As for the DLC expansion, even more things emerged, such as the floating city of Nesser, the dragon lich, the demon lord, and the blood war, which were simply beyond the capacity of the material world to withstand.
Just listening to it makes you feel like it's a chaotic mess of gods and demons.
However, Mo Jiang at least remembers that the story begins with a terrible plague attacking the city, plunging the residents into extreme panic.
This plague, known as the "Death of Lamentation," caused thousands of deaths and injuries, and the number of those already infected and left to die was incalculable.
Just as the northern part of the continent was being ravaged by this catastrophe, the lord of Winter City declared the entire city under quarantine, closing all the city gates to the outside world, thus isolating all the citizens from the outside world.
As he recalled this part, Mo Jiang couldn't help but scratch the back of his head, feeling that the plot was so familiar.
When he learned from the woodcutter that there had been no recent outbreaks of the virus and that Neverwinter showed no signs of being locked down, he realized that he was before the start of the story.
So, should I do something before the story begins?
As evening approached, the two finally arrived at the city gates of Neverwinter.
Given the woodcutter's pace, it was impossible for him to reach Neverwinter so quickly. According to the original estimate, with the woodcutter's strength and pace, they should not have been able to reach Neverwinter until noon the next day.
This speed was clearly not up to Mojang's requirements, so he told the woodcutter to stay where he was and went through the gate to Skaritz, bringing two horses with him.
One horse was naturally Mo Jiang's exclusive mount, Tian Jie, while the other was for the woodcutter to ride.
The other horse they brought was gentle in nature. Although it wasn't a warhorse, it was able to keep even a woodcutter who couldn't ride a horse sitting steadily on it.
Upon arriving in Neverwinter, the woodcutter naturally parted ways with Mo Jiang. His home was still some distance away, and he would have to make a journey as soon as possible if he wanted to return.
As for the horse, the woodcutter didn't take it with him. He knew very well that he couldn't hide such a large animal, and taking it back would only cause more trouble.
Oxen and horses are large livestock that a small woodcutter like him cannot own.
He had never imagined that he would receive a gold bean as a reward for leading a short distance today.
Upon entering Neverwinter City, Mo Jiang attracted a lot of attention, but not because of his size.
Although Mo Jiang's height of 1.9 meters would certainly attract attention, compared to Tian Jie's towering stature of 1.8 meters, he was clearly not as eye-catching.
Moreover, those in the know can see that Tianjie is still a child and his size and strength may become even greater.
A fine horse is a symbol of wealth and status in the outside world.
The unfamiliar face of Mo Jiang, accompanied by a fine horse, entered Wudong City, immediately attracting the attention of those who were interested.
179. Warning: Actions in Full Swing
Mo Jiang naturally sensed the covetous gazes from the shadows, but he was not surprised at all.
Having experienced multiple world travels, he knew long ago that being in a city didn't mean there were no dangers.
As for this medieval city, or even a fantasy world city, expecting it to be free of thieves, robbers, gangs, and other black-market industries is simply a joke.
He hadn't played many board games of Dungeons & Dragons, but he knew that behind the seemingly glamorous cities lay all sorts of evil organizations.
Compared to all sorts of cults, the city lord is much more tolerant of gangs and thieves.
Some of the nobles in the city were even the protectors of certain gangs, receiving tributes from them every month.
Although Tianjie is not a magical creature, it was born in the stables of the Bohemian royal family and has the purest bloodline. If Wenceslaus IV hadn't been so poor that he couldn't afford to raise it, and if Mojang hadn't provided him with so much material to maintain the dignity of the royal family, His Majesty might not have sent Tianjie out.
Given the quirks of European royalty, they probably couldn't afford to keep them and would have to kill them outright to prevent the royal warhorses from being lost to the outside world.
They value this thing.
From the perspective of the locals of Neverwinter, the Heavenly Calamity was definitely a warhorse born into a noble family. Even the horse that the woodcutter rode was still a fine mount.
Mo Jiang's behavior is no different from a child carrying gold through a bustling market.
I entered a tavern, which usually doubles as an inn and is also a gathering place for adventurers. Information about all sorts of people in the city spreads fastest here.
There were hitching posts right outside the tavern, and the sign nailed to the door was tattered and rickety, I wonder if it will fall to the ground the next time I push the door open.
As soon as the door was pushed open, a deafening sound boomed out. Inside the tavern, all sorts of people were engaged in drinking contests, gambling, and even fighting over tables and chairs.
Thankfully, the wooden door was sturdy enough, otherwise it really wouldn't have been able to block out the sound waves inside the tavern.
Mo Jiang walked to the bar counter of the tavern, where a waiter was wiping glasses.
"A stranger's face. I don't know how I can be of service to you?"
The tavern waiter had an excellent memory; he could remember every customer who bought on credit, as well as faces he had never seen before.
The moment he saw Mo Jiang, he knew that the other man was definitely not a resident of the North.
Mo Jiang placed a few gold beans on the bar. Gold is still a hard currency in this fantasy world, even useful when facing dragons.
"Accommodation is uncertain, but please bring up any food you have. Also, keep an eye on my horse; tie it up outside."
The value of a few gold beans is enough for Mojiang to stay here for a while.
The waiter swept the gold bean into his hand with a light touch. Watching the technique, Mo Jiang couldn't help but think of magicians and magic tricks. If those fingers could take away the gold bean silently, they could probably steal someone's wallet with ease.
Fortunately, Mo Jiang was used to either putting valuables in his inventory or throwing those that couldn't fit into the modern warehouse. Otherwise, seeing the waiter's actions, he probably would have had to find another place.
"This shop will definitely let you..."
Just as the waiter was about to say something, he suddenly stopped and looked towards the door with a surprised expression.
Mo Jiang also heard the noise outside the door. Although there were plenty of drunk guys making noise and fighting inside the tavern, to his five senses, these were just minor noises.
Therefore, he could clearly hear the sounds coming from outside the tavern: the sound of Heavenly Tribulation's hooves kicking, and the sound of bones breaking as the hooves struck people.
There was also a minor scream.
"Guest..." The waiter's smile was somewhat awkward. He couldn't help feeling awkward; the horse of a guest who had just checked in was being watched, and that was by no means a good thing.
"Why don't you go and take a look at your horse?"
Mo Jiang pinched the bridge of his nose, his tone somewhat helpless, "Okay, I'll go take care of it."
As he spoke, he stood up and walked towards the tavern door, with the waiter following closely behind. After all, he couldn't let a guest who had just checked in be robbed at the tavern entrance.
As soon as I stepped out of the tavern, I saw two people lying on the ground, their faces pale, clearly in pain.
There was a huge hoof print on their bodies, which was undoubtedly the result of the heavenly tribulation that had just struck these two guys.
Judging from the mark, the Heavenly Tribulation clearly held back its strength; otherwise, with its 1.8-meter shoulder height and weight, that kick would have been enough to kill someone instantly.
The waiter only glanced at the two figures lying on the ground: one was an ordinary person who had received pickpocket training, and the other was a Level 1 wanderer, a nobody among nobodys.
